Text João Pedro de Carvalho | Translation Bruno Ferreira
Due to my recent visit to Madeira, I felt the need to deepen my knowledge and decided to buy the second edition of the best guide, according to many (myself included), on the fascinating world around Madeira wine. A fascinating book written by Alex Liddell, a renowned expert when it comes to Madeira wine. A book that was first edited in 1986 and was literally sold out, but fortunately, and nearly 30 years after, got the so awaited second release of its Madeira the Mid-Atlantic Wine.
A book extremely well organized, totalling six chapters. The author begins by storytelling the Madeira, since its beginnings until the present day. Approaching various themes such as soils, varieties, vineyards, viticulture and winemaking, while offering a variety of maps and stats boards. In the between, some tasting notes as well as a broad and historical approach on the main producers. A book that was obviously subject of some needed updates, considering the 30 years that have gone by since its first edition.
It’s a technical book but far from bothersome, example is its colored cover, matching exactly the demands of such kind of book. The author’s deep knowledge shows, in this case, all his passion and wisdom through a captivating writing, while transmitting valuable information each page we read. Pinpointing, to those who seek it, all the information on Madeira wine. Therefore, a must in every oenophile’s library.
