The story of Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal began in 1922 with the establishing of João Pires & Filhos, Lda. but only in the 70’s upon the arrival of António d’Avillez to head of business would the company start to bottle its own brands, in 1982. At that time the oenology was in charge of the still today house’s oenologist Filipa Tomaz da Costa. It was around then that renowned brands like Quinta da Bacalhôa, Má Partilha, Catarina and Cova da Ursa surged forth. The moscatéis would later kick-off, in 1983, and get fame thanks to its quality and, above all its excellent consistency, harvest after harvest, always with an appealing price.
One of the most recent examples is this excellent Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setúbal Superior 2001. A wine that spent 8 years in the barrels used for malt whiskey aging. The “Superior” designation is ascribed to wines with a minimum of 5 aging years which have also obtained outstanding quality rating at the tasters’ chambers. I remind you that this wine is available at a shopping center with a 15€ price tag, a real temptation given its quality.
From the get-go freshness of the set standing out, well designed and appealing, rich and complex, with orange blossom and jelly of bitter orange, plenty of fruit raisin with fig, apricot, dried fruits, slight rancidity, a beautiful and involving complexity. Harmonious mouth with an immediate feel of orange touch, rancidity, freshness and involving body, unctuous with caramelized nuts and jelly of bitter orange along with a persistent and quite tasty background. The perfect buddy for a chocolate orange dessert.
