Sometimes with the eagerness to write on the new products in the market or the endless wines that make our delights, we end up forgetting and leaving aside those wines that keep us company in our everyday meals. The wines we drink in the comfort of our homes with no worries whatsoever, just because we feel like having a glass during the meal – regarding the whites, we always have a bottle in the cold, ready for opening. These are the faithful friends that rarely get a prominent place in the midst of so much newness and brands in the limelight. One of such wines has accompanied me over the past decade, albeit with ups and downs between harvests, the Adega de Pegões Colheita Selecionada white.
I bought this 2013’s white at the supermarket with a very attractive price tag, doesn’t even reach €3, the blend had some adjustments and at certain point the Pinot Blanc was replaced by Verdelho, aside from that continues to be a blend of Arinto, Chardonnay and Antão Vaz – from the sandy soils of Pegoes’ region where the respective Adega Cooperativa is located. Ferments in French oak barrels where it ages for four months and is subjected to bâtonnage. The cost-satisfaction relation it provides is high, which sometimes gets me wondering how many pricier wines have left me reluctant or even defrauded for the fact of how much they costed and how little they showed.
A white that fits well with white meats or fish, showing hints of fresh fruit – tropical and orchard fruits -, slightly vegetal – also fresh – in a set presenting good harmony between wood and fruit, pretty straight with a slight touch of vanilla wrapping it. Fresh and medium structure, tuned, one can feel the ripe fruit packed with some mid-palate creaminess, medium finish.
