Quinta do Mouro Vinha do Malhó 2009

Text João Pedro de Carvalho

If there are places for high quality wine production, Estremoz (Alentejo) is one of those sites by the number of projects and the quality of wines produced there. The Quinta do Mouro located in Estremoz is without doubt one of the best examples of the best made in Alentejo and Portugal. Lead by the charismatic producer Miguel Louro, and it may even be said that the great wines that are produced are the fruits of his stubbornness and genius. The first Quinta do Mouro went out to the market in 1994, and in 1999 the first step was launched for the producer’s most coveted wine: Quinta do Mouro Rótulo Dourado.

The latest top creation to leave the cellar goes by the name of Vinha do Malhó 2009, the first single vineyard made in Quinta do Mouro, produced from a 2ha vineyard called Malhó, planted in 2001, composed of two parcels on the hillside in front of the Quinta do Mouro’s house. Located in very poor soil of schist, the yield is low and during all these years has only contributed to enrich the final blend of Quinta do Mouro.

We are faced with one more wine fruit of the healthy stubbornness that characterizes Miguel Louro, because in a decision that contradicted the entire winemaking team, he considered that one of the batches available was differentiated by more bitterness, more acidity, more tannins, more of everything… the unique characteristics and with enough identity to mirror what Miguel Louro believes to be the Malhó vineyard identity. With a total production of 3,000 bottles that will only be launched again with the harvest of 2012, the wine as has already been said, stands for freshness, for strength and depth that it shows even if it is still a young man with his whole life ahead of him. This force sits on the palate, dominated by tannins and very lively fruit, earthy and spicy background with a very long and persistent finish. Elegant and provocative, a real temptation.
