Giroflé

Text João Pedro de Carvalho | Translation Bruno Ferreira

The betting on younger and irreverent consumer, grounded on wines that above all ensure the pleasure at the table and feature appealing and bold labels, is a practice that has been being timidly implemented by domestic producers. As for now it’s still easier to discard labels loaded with history rather than trying to create a new segment. Fortunately, that’s a reality seemingly to be undergoing some changes and nowadays we can already find – thanks to some projects – wines presenting easiness in acceptance to its consumers and labels with bolder design. This is the case of Giroflé project (FAP Wines) where the winemaker João Matos clearly bets on a line of wines which fit everything I’ve enumerated earlier, combining a strong gastronomic penchant.

While the Alvarinho’s label credits go for António Queirós Design, the Sparkling and two Douro have their labels designed by young grafitter Hazul Luzah. João Matos, lacking of an own winery and making use of the gathered experience in companies such as VDS or Beyra Vinhos de Altitude, decided to make partnerships with producers where he produces and bottles his Giroflé.

Kicking-off with Giroflé Alvarinho 2013, showing itself somewhat tense at first, needs some time in the glass. Unfolds into touches of ripe fruits, slightly tropical citrus , some jelly, lots of freshness, a breezy wine with a smoky background. Some austerity in the mouth, opening into honey point with all of the fruit’s freshness, tasty, presenting good persistence in the finish. Great matching for gambas al ajillo.

Hopping to Douro, two newcomers, one of them is Giroflé 2013 white with grape varieties Viosinho, Rabigato and Malvazia, weighting 12,5%. As for the wine, shows some vegetal austerity at first, unfolding into stone fruit and a touch of flint giving some depth. Mouth replicating all of the above. Good presence of white flesh fruit, mineral trace, medium structure. Great with swordfish fillets and tomato rice.

The other Giroflé is a 2013 Douro’s red, result of a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, a whole marked by fleshy and juicy fruit which transports us to the freshest of Douro’s profiles. The whole set shows balance and freshness, cacao and spices in the background, making it quite invitingly and appealing. Smooth mouth, tasty with fruit presence and freshness balancing the fruit presence. An ideal wine for coal-grilled meats.
