Vinha das Romãs (The Pomegranates’ vineyard)

Text João Pedro de Carvalho | Translation Bruno Ferreira

At Monte da Ravasqueira (Arraiolos), in 2002, it was decided that a set of pomegranate trees (occupying a 5 hectares area) should be plucked in order to plant vines, more precisely Syrah and Touriga Nacional. Hence the name Vinha das Romãs (pomegranates’ vineyard); these vines attained relevance quickly, mainly due to the outstanding quality its wines carry, but also because the of level of concentration and maturation, unique among the vineyard area of Monte da Ravasqueira.

That’s why it is a “single vineyard”, “monopole”, “vino de pago”, where the terroir prints unique and differentiating characteristics. The goal is a perfect balance between the two varieties, isolating at each harvest the areas of each variety that best carry the site’s singularity.

This 2011 is the best Vinha da Romãs to date, it’s a Syrah (70%) and Touriga Franca (30%). Presenting a clear Alentejano profile, where the freshness combines with an above average fruit quality. Clean. Good complexity, and with the barrels it aged on for 20 months quite well integrated, forming a harmonious set. Vanilla, plenty of round, tasty black fruit, licorice, and spices which many claim to not be a part of Alentejo wines… how wrong they are. A fine Alentejo wine, quite tasty and pleasurable. Average body, fruits exploding of flavor and the tannins bringing some nerve to the set, which shows itself quite engaging, long and pleasant.
